Well I think he just wasn't needed in Harry Potter considering he died, so he just got the role he was offered. That's how it is in the acting world. Or since there are worse things then death, a death eater made him one of them, because that's worse than death. And he did say he was Team Wizard.

That's very true. I've wondered this myself. So I came to the conclusion that he had the memory-loss charm used on him, and was then convinced that he was He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
